Straight Up & On The Rocks: Democracy Needs Our Courage
How can a democracy with over 340 million people and at least as many opinions, pride itself on independent thinking, yet have only two political parties—and most people choose their party for life?
We are witnessing politics as a war against half of the population, with all spoils going to the winner. In war, the victor feels justified in ruling without consideration of the loser. The GOP is using fear, deception, and violence to impose its will over the country. They have acted quickly to restrict individual speech and freedom of the press, and by labeling those with opposing views as domestic terrorists and threats to the nation, they are moving closer to their desired goal of one-party rule. Every day, Trump, Stephen Miller, and the GOP attempt new ways to kill democracy and dismantle our individual freedoms and rights. Make no mistake, this is what fascism looks like. It is what Hitler and Mussolini did.
Unethical Supreme Court rulings have allowed the corruption and sale of our system of checks and balances and attacked our voting rights—the protective cornerstones of our democracy. They have done this openly to consolidate unchallenged authoritarian power for Trump and the Republican Party. How long before democracy is criminalized? Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. Many Americans already accept these Orwellian contradictions as truth; by giving up liberty, you free yourself from the burden of making choices and taking responsibility. Leave that up to your government. So much for small government that stays out of your life, which most of them espouse.
Could you have imagined that other Americans would be against truth, freedom, justice, and democracy? How do you maintain relationships with friends or family members who are so gullible, or willingly ignorant, or worse—morally fractured as to embrace the cruelty of a proud rapist, criminal, liar, thief, child-snatcher, anti-everything-American, vile, and genuinely stupid man who revels in hurting people, and envies the world’s cruelest dictators? Not only are Trump and his friends and family looting and destroying America, but he is actually tearing down the East Wing of the White House. And you can be sure he is profiting from the $300 million price tag.
These are beyond typical political disagreements. When people embrace beliefs that threaten your safety or identity, dismiss human rights for all people, or reject fundamental values of fairness, equality, and the inherent worth and dignity of all people, you’re not dealing with politics. You’re dealing with a profound moral chasm, bereft of empathy and common human decency. How do you ignore such dehumanizing, destructive values in people you care about? It mystifies me how people who consider themselves loving and compassionate have no empathy or regard for others until a similar plight befalls them.
We must take every action before peaceful methods of preventing this are taken from us.

What People Are Saying…
“Graham Sale has a different take on political cartooning. Not the same old gags and worn formats of old. He mixes sharp humor and intelligence with great effect, wickedly pointing out the hypocrisy spewed by politicians these days. He makes you think. We need that in our political discourse these days.”
—Chris Peck, former Editor of The Commercial Appeal, Memphis
“Crazy Little Thing Called Love” is the best damned book I’ve seen in years. Laughing out loud at these intelligent cartoons is truly a guilty pleasure. If irreverence is a virtue, Graham Sale is a saint.”
—Dan Barker, Co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation and author
